We watched the TV series years ago, and were delighted to watch this four- part video many years on.

The stellar cast are superb; although it was distracting and unnecessary to have different actors playing the same character. The first 3 films provide excellent entertainment but the fourth and last is disappointing, principally because many of the key roles are recast, disconcerting if one has strongly identified with the characters as portrayed by the actors in the previous films.

The first thing to say is that this was very disappointing, with parts of it mediocre, both in production and screenplay. I have now started reading the novels again with enjoyment because of the way the films have brought the scenes and characters to life. PAL, Colour, Anamorphic, Widescreen, HiFi Sound, Simon Russell Beale, James Purefoy, Miranda Richardson, Zoe Wanamaker, Eileen Atkins. But there is no time for characterisation, many of the characters have been cut (Barnby, Frederica and Dicky Umfraville etc), and some characters appear on screen for such a short period of time that it is impossible to care; Robert Tolland's death, for example, or Maclintick's suicide, both would have made me shrug my shoulders if I hadn't known who the characters were.

I'm a fan of Simon Russell Beale, and I looked forward to seeing him as Widmerpool. But I must say my eyes moistened at the deaths of Lady Molly and Moreland. The plot is far too intricate to encapsulate, and in the end, plot isn't the appeal of British drawing-room dramas, anyway.
