Since it happens to be close to December 25th, my reason for making this dress is so it can be my "Christmas dress". I know it's not perfect for the 40's, but it works and it saves me the time and trouble of making a new corset for a dress I will probably only wear a few times.

Your new undergarments look fabulous, Sarah! In fact, some wealthy gentlemen continued to wear corsets. I think you did a fantastic job, and I can't wait to see the dress over it all! They're located in Gettysburg. The waist suppression for these corsets is fairly minimal, and creates a longer waist. :) So far I am super in love with this era. The folks over at Facts asked women to try on the underwear that women wore in the past and it was kinda like playing dress-up with the most restrictive clothes ever.

It is all plain sewing with only a bit of gathering for the waistline. I just love the look of crisp, white period undergarments. In the 19th century women's underwear was usually open between the legs but in the 20th century closed knickers replaced them. top hats. The stays give more of a straight, upright look to the torso and I loosened the laces holding the straps so the bust can sit a *tad* lower than it does for my regency gowns.

It’s one of those things where I really want to make the whole outfit and wear it to see if I can figure it out!. ... and by the 1840s these then evolved into the risqué pantalettes that frilled decoratively around the calves. As you can see it is pretty limp and straight looking, even though the petticoat by itself has a lot of body and is fairly stiff. Men also wore vests. I'm so inspired! They differentiate from the earlier longline corsets of the 1810s/20s in their shaping. I cannot say how happy I am with how this came out. Lovely "new" dish! Underwear is a curious form of clothing: it can be entirely practical – there to maintain body heat, cover our modesty, and support the soft tissues of the body – or it can be a flirtatious symbol of sexual suggestiveness. The hip gussets are wider, and 1840s corsets have far more emphasis on the waist, and on the bust/waist/hip differential. Instant Big Butt. Oh....blue willow, sigh, so pretty!

Sarah, this is breathtaking! 1840s, probably American - Corset and petticoat - White cotton corset boned with baleen; front lacing; white cotton petticoat with eyelet border. Some men wore combinations, pants and vest in one garment. Maybe it has something to do with the amount of heavy petticoats? Those match my china set, and are surprisingly hard to find replacement bits for. Many corsets that were made or worn in the 1840s are probably identified as earlier, if they follow earlier fashions and techniques, or slightly later, if they use just-introduced cuts and materials. This bum pad is made from the pattern included with the 1850's dress in Simplicity 3727. In addition to the two main styles of 1840s corsets, there are a few extent pieces that are sartorial novelties, such as this example, with lacing over the bust: Corset (nursing corset? Can't *wait* to see the dress! The invention of the steel cage crinoline changed the underwear of Victorian women. The divided front busk has yet to appear. And the more I see of them, the more I’m fascinated by what MrsC said. I like those old shapes and corded ones.
