The best wordless scene is the final one, where Philip accepts the Letters Patent that turn him into His Royal Highness Prince Philip.

He hates himself for needing the title, and he realizes it won’t actually fix anything, but he still wants it anyhow, and hates himself for that, too. Are we really supposed to sympathize with Philip? In season 2, episode three of The Crown, Elizabeth (Claire Foy) tries to do her best Beyoncé impression (read: be an independent woman), but it’s clear her husband’s absence is getting to her.

The tiny Christmas spy is going to be very busy, so if you wanted to be naughty, this is the year to do it.

Having dispensed with all of that, episode three is free to present a more effective image of Sad Philip than the season has in its first two installments.

Whatever Bly Manor’s ghosts are trying to accomplish, they have at least two accomplices inside the house.

The other strength of this episode is its portrait of Eileen Parker, which culminates in the scene between her and Elizabeth in her home. Entertainment Weekly is a registered trademark of Meredith Corporation All Rights Reserved. “One always has to accept one’s own part, I believe, in any mess,” she observes. And, as a final jab, Elizabeth gets Michael to shave off his own (dreaded) mustache. Throughout episode two, I wavered on how to feel about this Actually Philip Did Have a Hard Time sympathy tour.

The duke asks for Mike’s resignation ASAP to avoid further scandal and tells him “There is no room for humanity” before casually dropping him off in the nearest harbor.

Elizabeth is equally resentful and frustrated, and it plays across her face in her refusal to meet Philip’s eyes. Create one here. Now would be a great time for Elizabeth to share a bottle of wine (or four) and a rant with Eileen.

Prime Minister Anthony Eden (Jeremy Northam) returns from Jamaica with a slight tan and a bone to pick. Eden admits he’ll make history by being an epic failure.

Armed with the Thursday Club letter as evidence, Eileen does intend to go through with suing Mike for a divorce, and when her attorney gives the palace a heads up they are none to happy about it. The Crown aims to be a private depiction of her life, but she is all mask and no interior. An agency flew away with photos of their son, Archie, playing in their backyard. My entire adult life has been favors to you people.” Eileen’s fury and frustration and sadness are so palpable and righteous, and when Elizabeth tentatively asks if she could just hold off for a little while longer, the question comes off as astonishingly tin-eared. She tells Philip that the last weeks have shown her more about humiliation than she’d ever care to know, but we see little of it. The meeting with Tommy Lascelles in the park is a little more forced — yes, Eileen, obviously Lascelles wasn’t just hanging around on random park benches and stumbling into you by happenstance. His return from those three weeks he spent in Jamaica for his health (I’d love to try that, please) is met with a cold reception from his cabinet and party, who want him out for damaging the country’s international reputation and cutting out in the middle of an economic and diplomatic crisis. So Elizabeth grants him the Letters Patent that give him the title of prince, providing him higher standing within the palace. ), Philip gazes at her. It’s just fascinating that the show is so much better at telling stories about people proximate to the Crown, yet struggles to tell stories about the woman who wears it.

Elizabeth asks Eileen to hold off on the divorce, but it looks like royal decree (thus far) only extends to her own sister, Princess Margaret. The other bit of on-shore/off-shore marital drama continuing to roil the palace (and the newspapers) is Mike and Eileen Parker. © 2010-2020 Wow Media Products, Inc doing business as PureWow. Eileen isn’t interested in a trip down nostalgia lane and shows Elizabeth the letter from Mike bragging about his escapades. “I’m currently outranked by my 8-year-old son,” Philip wails as he demands more respect. Scepter! The scene where she reads aloud from Philip’s letters and stares lovingly at the footage of him from the South Pole is so, so sweet, and she’s obviously hurt to discover evidence of his infidelity.

And she refuses to delay the announcement when Elizabeth asks, telling her she’s through living her life through favors for the royal family. Suddenly, we’re back on the boat where we started the season and the marital issues are aplenty.

He finally gets the hint and offers the queen his resignation. He is furious that she demanded that he give her a price for his loyalty, and he’s begrudgingly triumphant that he finally has a title. Is she really so sheltered? Armando Iannucci on a presidency that has surpassed satire. For this, Michael Adeane goes for the big guns — bringing longtime royal private secretary Tommy Lascelles out of retirement to assist with the damage control.

But in her home, with Eileen putting the kettle on and handing Elizabeth the all-too-telling letter to the Thursday Club, Eileen is exactly right.

When she drops by Eileen’s for a visit and asks if there’s anything she can do to help, Eileen shows her the Thursday Club letter – proof her husband was unfaithful.
Mike’s letter bragging about their (read: Philip’s) exploits on the royal tour will no doubt go public.

Eden lashes out and reminds them they were all once behind him. The Crown Season 2 Trailer Deep Dive. Phil, the kind chap that he is, is there for his friend, but he is more concerned that the news of their boisterous ways has reached his wife. (See: Philip’s line about how there’s no room for “humanity” when he asks for Mike’s resignation, and also the entire conversation where Mike is suddenly given a chance to be surprisingly thoughtful.)

And the icing on the royal drama cake? As Elizabeth sees her husband for the first time in months, she tersely informs him they’ll talk later (you know what that means, Philip) before heading out to be photographed together—all smiles, of course. Nonetheless, Elizabeth opts to keep her marriage intact by granting Philip a golden goose the title of Prince of the U.K. and Northern Ireland. Boy, bye. Rather than spend time naming Eden’s successor, Elizabeth must deal with the implications of Mike Parker’s divorce and the irritating headlines that will ensue (and directly affect her) from his infidelity.

If you needed any indication we were going to catch back up to the events of the premiere this episode, the title was your first clue. The closest we get is that fight with Philip aboard the royal yacht, and even then, it’s more a negotiation of how they’ll keep up the mask than it is how they’ll keep loving one another.

What a fascinating observation! And it has indeed.

We understand Michael Adeane, too, never quite living up to the legacy of his predecessor, and shaving his mustache for reasons that must be completely mysterious to him.

Meanwhile, it’s fitting that Mike — who was writing all these letters he shouldn’t have — gets news of his own divorce via telegram, which means he has to tell Philip about it and the letters, and now Philip knows that his wife knows about it. Now he has a crown, a cape and everything, but all that royal garb isn’t enough to hide his childish behavior. It’s no real surprise that minor characters like Eileen Parker are coming through with remarkable detail and attention.

A recap of “The Crown” season two, episode three “Lisbon,” starring Claire Foy and Matt Smith. Together, it was supposed to add up to a nuanced portrait, but it felt more like a mixed bag. Staffel 2 Episode 3 (The Crown 2x03) Palastinsider versuchen, einen Skandal zu verhindern, der Philip (Matt Smith) in einem schlechten Licht dastehen lassen könnte. Instead, they decide to send Elizabeth to Lisbon a day early to meet him for a reunion photo call.

Eileen forges ahead without even looking back. I will never stop yelling, “He signed up for this! And yes, Matt Smith and his cheekbones are great. Eden’s welcome to the Cabinet is hardly warm, and his colleagues don’t mince words when they tell him it was a less-than-stellar idea to attack Egypt.

Compromise is essential in marriage, even when you’re royal, right?

But their reunion isn’t a warm one: Elizabeth stares him down, rebuffs a kiss, gives a “shall we?” before they go out to face photographers, which still doesn’t quell rumors of a rift between them. The British press has a field day with the divorce announcement, but so far Phillip has remained out of the headlines. Already a subscriber?

He shouldn’t need any of this, but apparently he does, so now she’s forced to try to fix their marriage with a gruesomely public display.
