ME 1403. Introduction to federal regulation and other pertinent issues. Topics include Six Sigma for process design and improvement, lean manufacturing fundamentals, value-stream mapping, performance evaluation, and other contemporary enterprise process engineering approaches. (Formally ME 3244. Credit cannot be earned for both ME 3244 and ME 3241.) Students who lack entrance requirements may be admitted based on ACT scores, high school rank and credits, or may be admitted to pre-engineering status in the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center. Introduction to UNIX (login, shell scripts, editors, file permissions), visualization (software tools, data formats), Parallel programming (numerical libraries, Message Passing Interface, Trilinos, GPGPU programming). Prerequisites: Senior standing in mechanical engineering; admission to the University Honors Program. Description: The course introduces the optical and electronic processes in inorganic and organic molecules and polymers that govern the behavior of practical organic electronic and optoelectronic devices.

The course covers the fundamentals of mechanical engineering measurements including data analysis (statistics, graphing, spectral analysis); signal conditioning and data readout; and the measurement of length/displacement, rate of rotation, stress/strain, temperature, pressure, fluid velocity, fluid flow rate, vibration/acceleration, and sound. Selected topics in fabrication and processing of materials; macroscopic and microscopic aspects of the mechanical behavior of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites; Failure mode analysis in materials; optimization of material selection in the design process. Considerations of safety, reliability, environmental, and economic constraints, and ethical and social impacts. Generally offered: Fall, Spring, Summer. Differential Tuition: $165. ME 4812. Rigid body dynamics using Euler's equations and Lagrange's equations.

Two-dimensional potential flow. (0-4) 2 Credit Hours. Description: Review of rigid body dynamics; equations of motion, free vibration, damping; linear response of one, two, and multi-degree of freedom systems; forced vibrations, harmonic, periodic, impulse, and general responses; resonance and vibration isolation; rotating imbalance; Fourier transforms, digitization and analysis of experimental data. Differential Tuition: $165. Special topics may include legged robots, soft robots, climbing robots, advanced control methods, image processing, computer vision, estimation.

Description: Faculty-supervised independent study. For the BS programs that allow undergraduate electives from the department of system engineering and operations research, the students may chose the graduate version of such elective courses to replace the corresponding undergraduate courses.

Senior Design I. Differential equations, dimensional methods and similarity. Highly-qualified students in the Mechanical Engineering, BS have the option of obtaining an accelerated Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, MS. Students in the Mechanical Engineering, BS program may apply to this option if they have earned 90 undergraduate credits with an overall GPA of at least 3.30. ME 4583. (3-0) 3 Credit Hours. ENGR 10 becomes critical to your success in the major if not completed by the end of the first term of enrollment. Special Studies may be repeated for credit when topics vary, but not more than 9 semester credit hours, regardless of discipline, will apply to a bachelor’s degree. ASME Section XIII Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, inspection, maintenance, repair, and modification of pressure vessels. May be repeated for credit, but not more than 6 semester credit hours of independent study, regardless of discipline, will apply to a bachelor’s degree. Vibration of machines. Lab time arranged. Differential Tuition: $165. To develop and maintain high quality graduate programs of study and research leading to master's and doctoral degrees in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering. Prerequisite: EGR 2323. The laboratory requirements are designed to provide hands-on experience in basic measurement and instrumentation equipment and the application of classroom theory. This course is a prerequisite for: AGEN 443; CIVE 334; CIVE 378; MECH 230; MECH 330; MECH 343; MECH 370.

Description: Survey of nuclear engineering concepts and applications. Credit towards the degree cannot be earned in both CSCE/MATH 440/840 and MECH 480/880.

Prerequisite: ME 4313.

Construction and derivation of numerical algorithm as well as application limits. Deflection of statically determinate and indeterminate beams. Or, instead, COMM 210, COMM 283, or COMM 286 may be taken in the Third Semester. Highly-qualified students in the Mechanical Engineering, BS program have the option of applying to the accelerated Data Analytics Engineering, MS program. Introduction to combined stresses and column theory. Accessories in this laboratory include desktop computers, a wide-carriage printer, and other instruments. The Mechanical Engineering curriculum provides education and basic engineering training through the required coursework.

ME 4813. This applies to all undergraduate courses offered by the Volgenau School except IT 104 Introduction to Computing (Mason Core) and STAT 250 Introductory Statistics I (Mason Core). Students must have a working background in their selected concentration area.
