I have not found that to be true.
A good mixture of grass and white clover can yield as much as pure grass which receives 175-pounds of Nitrogen per acre. It is very persistent. However, the answer to dealing with bloat is not avoiding or getting rid of legumes. That is at least my experience.
Hello! Neches has been developed by Texas A&M for surviving the harsh conditions of southern U.S. When hearing about white clover, some of you may think of the Dutch white clover that grows in lawns, which is low growing with small leaves and a low yield. The percentage of legumes in the pasture should be no less than thirty percent.
Neches has high dry matter yield compared to other varieties also developed in the South. Because of their taller growth habit, these varieties are often referred to as large white clover types. Current studies show an increased dry matter intake of two pounds per cow, per day, when white clover is added to the grass. Red clover has many favorable attributes, among them its high yield, its ability in growing at a lower pH, its drought tolerance, and its high digestibility. In fact, I do not apply any commercial nitrogen. It reduces the need for nitrogen fertilizer greatly due to their ability to utilize air nitrogen with their bacteria (Rhizobia) attached to their roots.

Most varieties do not withstand close grazing. It is highly digestible. That leaves us with white clover. There is one big downside to red clover: it is a bi-annual and needs to be re-seeded frequently.

Much of my pasture exceeds this mark. Recently, farm trials have shown that these newer varieties release higher levels of Nitrogen to the companion grass than older varieties. There are some rather exotic legumes like Kura Clover but I would stay away from the likes of it.
Alfalfa is, in my view, not a suitable legume for grazing.
In my view, having legumes in your pasture is essential for a sustainable pasture-based sheep operation. Useful species on infertile land (provided the soil is well fertilised with phosphorus and sulphur). With the exceptions of those fields that get mostly hayed and rarely pastured, my stands of birdsfoot trefoil have always been fading. Alfalfa loses its leaves the moment some killing frost hits and therefore does not stockpile well. Birdsfoot trefoil is the exception to it since it is none-bloating. Dutch or common white clovers have slightly shorter petioles than the large white clover types. That leaves us with red and white clover. The name of my farm must have given that away.
