One look at the photo above should be enough to justify the goblin shark’s place on this list of weirdest sharks. The Dusky Shark is a large shark with a pointed snout, long curved pectoral fins and a ridge between the two dorsal fins. The tail is crescent shaped. Chondrichthyes consists of two groups, Holocephali and Elasmobranchii, and within Elasmobranchii are eight (8) orders of sharks. The first dorsal fin is tall and the second is low and broad. Realising Mr Mullaly's haul was all from the same species, Dr Fitzgerald suspected that the teeth came from one individual shark and there might be more teeth still entombed in the rock at Jan Juc. Recognising the significance of the discovery, Mr Mullaly contacted Dr Erich Fitzgerald, Senior Curator of Vertebrate Palaeontology at Museums Victoria with an offer to donate the teeth to Museums Victoria’s collection, an offer gratefully accepted.
In fact, nearly all attacks in Australian coastal waters have been attributed to just three species: Great white sharks, tiger sharks and bull sharks (which aren't usually found in Victorian waters). However, due to declines in numbers, a handful of species are now listed as 'threatened' under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
