The Peacocks brilliant ‘train’ contains over 200 shimmering feathers, each one decorated with eyespots. The maleis a large, up to 28 inches (~70cm) long.
Later, Chapin visited the Royal Museum of Central Africa and saw two stuffed specimens with similar feathers labeled as the 'Indian peacock' which he later discovered to be the Congo peacock, a completely different species. It was only recorded as a species in 1936 by Dr. James Chapin after his failed search for the elusive okapi. His plumage is deep blue with metallic green and violet tinge. Dr. Chapin noticed that the native Congolese headdresses contained long reddish-brown feathers that he couldn't identify with any previously known species of bird. It has a bare red neck skin, grey feet, black tail of fourteen rectrices (= the long flight feathers of the tail) and adorned with vertical white elongated hair-like feathers on its crown. This type of peacock is native to the Eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially in the regions between Lomami and Congo River. The train is bronze and green and has a series of ‘eyes’ which are more prominent when the tail is fanned. Their long ‘trains’ are not the tail quill feathers but elongated upper tail feather coverts. The Congo peacock feeds on fruits found in common tree species in its ecosystem, insects, and other invertebrate species.
