Every few months, the herders migrate with their yak, sheep and goats in search of fresh grazing pastures.

Pashmina accessories are known for their softness and warmth. The most popular pashmina fabric is a 70% pashmina/30% silkblend, but 50/50 is also common. But their ancient way of life is now under threat from climate change, fake Pashmina imports from China and the lure of an easier and more comfortable life.

Goats used for pashmina shed their winter coat every spring. According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission: Some manufacturers use the term pashmina to describe an ultra fine cashmere fiber; others use the term to describe a blend of cashmere and silk. The region's high altitudes, freezing temperatures and harsh winds are essential in stimulating the growth of the goats' super-soft undercoat. In Mughal times, this was used as an indicator of rank and nobility.

Rearing these valuable animals in such inhospitable conditions are the Changpa people.

A yak caravan winds its way across steep valleys. Many Changpa women have abandoned their nomadic lives, and now weave the wool outside the city of Leh. If the item contains only cashmere, it should be labeled 100% Pashmina or All Cashmere, by the Wool Act or regulations.

This luxurious fiber is known as Pashmina, the softest and most expensive type of cashmere wool in the world. At an altitude of more than 14,000 feet, where winter temperatures can fall to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, it is hard to believe anyone, or anything, can survive in the vast ice desert that is Changthang, on the Tibetan Plateau between India and China. Fine silk over fast fashion: The last hand-weavers of India's holiest city. In the spring (the moulting season), the goats naturally shed their undercoat, which regrows in winter. [6] In 1568, Kashmir was conquered by Babur's grandson Akbar. In 1526, Babur (1483–1530) founded the Mughal Empire in India, and established the practice of giving khil'at (or "robes of honour", typically made of expensive fabric) to members of their durbar to indicate high service, great achievement, or royal favour. If the number Changpa families in Kharnak fall below 10 then it will become too tough for us to continue this life. They are available in a range of sizes, from "scarf" 12 in × 60 in (0.30 m × 1.52 m) to "wrap" or "stole" 28 in × 80 in (0.71 m × 2.03 m) to full sized shawl 36 in × 80 in (0.91 m × 2.03 m) and in rare cases, "macho" 12 ft × 12 ft (3.7 m × 3.7 m). "These are worrying times we are experiencing," he said.

The Changpa carefully comb the goats' hair during the spring molting season to harvest the downy undercoat, and then the good fiber is laboriously separated from the bad by hand.

Although the goats are the same breed, they are not reared in the extreme conditions required to stimulate the growth of the super-soft undercoat required to be considered 100% pure Pashmina. Situated between the Himalayan and Karakorum mountain ranges, it is the highest permanently inhabited plateau in the world, and home to an extremely hardy and rare breed of goat -- the Changra, or Pashmina goat.

For example, a blend of cashmere and silk might be labeled 50% Cashmere, 50% Silk or 70% Cashmere, 30% Silk, depending upon the actual cashmere and silk content.

[6] In Akbar's time, a pair of pashmina shawls were an expected part of khil'at ceremonies. The fibers can measure a mere 12 microns in width, making them around eight times finer than human hair and up to eight times warmer than sheep wool. Some shawls marketed as pashmina shawls contain (sheep) wool,[13] while other unscrupulous companies marketed artificial fabrics such as viscose and others as "pashmina" with deceptive marketing statements such as "authentic viscose pashmina".

Pure pashmina is a rather gauzy, open weave, as the fibre cannot tolerate high tension. In recent years however, due to a lack of Pashmina wool from Ladakh's herders, weavers in the wider Kashmir region have begun importing raw Pashmina from China and Mongolia to meet ever-increasing demand for their products.

[3] Both generic cashmere and pashmina come from the same goat, but generic cashmere ranges from 12–21 microns in diameter, whereas pashmina refers only to those fibres that range from 12–16 microns. This undercoat is collected by combing the goat, not by shearing, as in other fine wools. Changthang rarely gets much snowfall, and when it does, it usually begins in January or February.

I visited them in the Ladakh region, on the Indian side of the plateau, to photograph their winter migration in early December. [6] One or all of these could be made of pashmina and embroidered in gold cloth. There, the herders who have given up their nomadic lives have set up their own neighborhood, called Kharnak Ling. The perils to goat rearing in turn threaten the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people in the region who, directly or indirectly depend on Pashmina. The approximate time put into producing a single traditional pashmina stole (70x200cm) is 180 hours. The most popular pashmina fabric is a 70% pashmina/30% silk blend, but 50/50 is also common. The images in this feature were taken during his recent trip to document the lives of Pashmina goat herders. When these shawls rose into fashion prominence during the era, they were marketed dubiously. [6] From the 16th to the early 20th centuries, the Safavid, Zand, and Qajar emperors of Iran also wore pashmina and gifted Kashmir shawls as khil'at within their political and religious practices. See also cashmere wool. [9] In France, the pashmina Kashmir shawl gained status as a fashion icon through Empress Joséphine's enthusiastic use.

Despite the herders' brutal living conditions, they are some of the friendliest and most generous people one could ever wish to meet. The Indian government's Ministry of Textiles has attempted to reverse the trend by providing, Jimmy Nelson revisits world's most remote tribes in 'Homage to Humanity'. Pashmina accessories are known for their softness and warmth.

Pashmina refers to a fine variant of spun cashmere, the animal-hair fibre forming the downy undercoat of the Changthangi goat. The goats naturally begin shedding their fur in the spring, and herders harvest it using a special comb.

Much of this Pashmina is not what it is claimed to be.

The fibers are then hand spun, after which the equally painstaking weaving process can begin. The fibers can measure a mere 12 microns in width, making them around eight times finer than human hair and up to eight times warmer than sheep wool.

Powerful portraits show the last of Nagaland's tattooed headhunters, The nomads and scientists alike are adamant that. The FTC encourages manufacturers and sellers of products described as pashmina to explain to consumers, on a hangtag, for example, what they mean by the term.As with all other wool products, the fiber content of a shawl, scarf or other item marketed as pashmina must be accurately disclosed.
